New Year Resolutions for Your Home

New Year Resolutions for Your Home

Every January, we start brainstorming new year resolutions that will help improve our lives. But this year, instead of only thinking about personal goals, consider setting a new year resolution for the place you spend the most time–your home! Here are 7 ideas for new year’s resolutions for your home:

Fix the Little Things

Don’t let another year pass without attending to that broken light switch cover, that crooked ceiling fan, or that hole in the drywall. All of those tedious little jobs you’ve neglected can be taken care of a lot quicker than you think.

Whether you tackle them yourself or hire a professional, take inventory of those little things that are easy to ignore, and make it your resolution to check off each one before the year is through.

Without some regular organizing and purging, cabinets, drawers, and closets can quickly get cluttered and unmanageable. Not only does that make your house look dirty and dated, but it’s a stressful environment to live in as well!

Start the new year off fresh with an ambitious decluttering of your messiest spots.

Plan for the Future

It’s easy to get so caught up in the day-to-day of running a home that you forget to make a plan for the future. This year, sit down and write down your ideas for future updates and changes you’d like to make in your home. Not only will this help you budget for larger expenses like a new roof or siding, but it will also remind you of your broader goals that you hope to work toward, like putting in that fireplace or creating your home gym.

Hot tip: Preventative maintenance can help you avoid costly and time-consuming repairs down the road. So make some phone calls and schedule your maintenance appointments for the year in advance. There’s nothing like starting a new year with a filled-in calendar!

Organize One Drawer or Closet Each Month

Every home has at least one: the junk drawer. Or maybe yours is a junk closet or junk basket on the counter. Whatever the case, make it your resolution this year to tackle one storage area each month. By the end of the year, you’ll have an organized home that will make it easier to find what you need when you need it.

Bring in Fresh Flowers

This might sound trivial, but you’d be surprised at the impact that a vase of fresh flowers can have on your mood and the feel of your home. Compared to other home update options, florals are one of the least expensive updates that you can bring to a space.

Plants and flowers can do everything from improving your air quality, adding a splash of color,   and providing aromatherapy to lift your mood! Make it your resolution to bring home a bouquet or succulent once a week, once a month, or whatever schedule suits you.

Cut Down On Energy Usage

Going green doesn’t only mean big changes like installing solar panels or buying an electric car. You can start by cutting your energy usage in your home.

Turning off lights, adjusting your thermostat, installing LED bulbs, and composting are simple ways to reduce your carbon footprint in your home. If you’re ready to think bigger, you can also look into investing in smart or energy-efficient appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers.

You don’t have to buy expensive new furniture or do a complete renovation to refresh your space. A simple rearrangement of a room can have a big makeover effect!

A little repositioning of your furniture and freshened up wall décor goes a long way toward giving your home a whole new vibe.
